SUMMARY:EOSC-A at the Science Summit at the UN General Assembly
DESCRIPTION:The International Science Council and its partners will organise the 9th edition of the Science Summit around the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) on 12-29 September 2023. \nThe role and contribution of science to attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be the central theme of the Summit. The objective is to develop and launch science collaborations to demonstrate global science mechanisms and activities to support the attainment of the UN SDGs\, Agenda 2030 and Local2030. The meeting will also prepare input for the United Nations Summit of the Future\, which will take place during UNGA79 beginning on 12 September 2024. \nThe Summit will examine what enabling policy\, regulatory and financial environments are needed to implement and sustain the science mechanisms required to support genuinely global scientific collaborations across continents\, nations and themes. Scientific discovery through the analysis of massive data sets is at hand. This data-enabled approach to science\, research and development will be necessary if the SDGs are to be achieved. \nFor the first time\, the Science Summit at the United Nations General Assembly will examine how equitable access to big science institutions can accelerate the progress of the UN’s sustainable goals such as tackling poverty and hunger. \nThe Science Summit will begin with a Digital Science Plenary on 12-13 September 2023 with Thematic Sessions planned until the end of the Summit on the 29th. \nSuzanne Dumouchel\, Head of International Coordination at CNRS and member of the Board of Directors of EOSC-A\, will give two presentations there on September 20th and 21st respectively. \n1)    Wednesday\, September 20\, 11:00am EDT \n[VIRTUAL] A People Centered Approach to developing Digital Regulation (201101) (Speakers: dumouchel)Mei Lin Fung • Sofie Maddens • Effrain Gonzalez • Suzanne Dumouchel • Christine Asjoma \n2)    Thursday\, September 21\, 9:00am EDT \n[IN-PERSON] 50th Anniversary of the Internet: A People Centered future (210913)LIMITED Doreen Bogdan Martin • Vint Cerf • Amandeep Gill Singh • Secretary General • Suzanne Dumouchel • Don Graves • Amir Banifatemi • Ndemo Bitange • Christine Asjoma

Over 470 individuals\, representing policy and decision makers\, experts and practitioners from the EOSC field\, have registered to participate (online and in person). Since this year’s symposium will be in hybrid format\, if you have not secured a spot yet\, please register for online participation by Thursday\, 14 September\, close of business: \nhttps://events.eoscfuture.eu/eoscsymposium23/begin \nThe event will kick off on Wednesday\, 20 September\, at 9.15 CEST sharp. The opening session will be chaired by Anna Panagopoulou\, Director for ERA & Innovation\, DG Research and Innovation\, European Commission\, and will start with a welcome speech from Gonzalo Arévalo\, General Director for Research Planning\, Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation. Opening messages will also be heard from the European Commission\, jointly by Ms Panagopoulou and Gustav Kalbe\, Acting Director of DG Connect C – Digital Excellence and Science Infrastructure. \nThe floor will then be passed to the keynote speakers: Joaquin Tintoré\, Research Professor from the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) and Director of SOCIB\, the Coastal Ocean Observing and Forecasting System of the Balearic Islands\, who will address how Open Science principles are applied to SOCIB’s research infrastructure for ocean observation and data. Emanuela Girardi\, Founder and President of Pop AI and President of ADRA (AI\, Data\, Robotics Association)\, will offer the audience a deep dive into the complex world of AI and reflect on its current\, and potential\, impact on research. \nA second plenary will focus on the achievements of the EOSC tripartite collaboration. The morning will end with a presentation on the main results and legacy of the EOSC Future project. \nDuring the afternoon of 20 September\, and the following days\, participants will have the opportunity to discuss governance\, financial\, technical\, policy topics related to EOSC\, complemented by sessions aimed at increasing awareness among the EOSC community about the developments of other strategic initiatives such as data spaces\, Destination Earth\, European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDICs)\, to mention a few. The closing plenary on Friday\, 22 September\, from 11-12.30 CEST\, will bring together key EOSC stakeholders\, together with the audience\, to discuss the future of EOSC\, in particular EOSC federation. \nThis is just a short overview of what to expect during the EOSC Symposium. To stay updated on what is happening live\, follow our hashtag #EOSCsymposium23. \nCheck out the final programme: https://symposium23.eoscfuture.eu/programme/ \nIf you have questions about the event\, please contact: symposium23@eoscfuture.eu \n\nUnconference results\n \nOn the 28 of August the unconference voting has closed with over 180 votes. Six topics have been prioritized by the community and added to the programme: \n\nEOSC Nodes\nTrust in Sharing Sensitive Data\nHarmonised PID practices for protected data\nData spaces in dialogue: Cultural heritage data as an essential resource for humanities research\nDigital twins and EOSC: Advancing data-driven science through optimal data use\, data management\, computing and research infrastructures. Insights from the Biodiversity Digital Twin project (BioDT)\nLeveraging global data communities in regional initiatives and cross-border infrastructures\n\nThese sessions will be featured on Thursday 21 September from 16 to 18:15 CEST. As previously communicated\, the unconference is for “on site” participants only. \nFree online attendance for the Data Spaces session\nTo facilitate the participation of the broader community\, the session “Data Spaces” on Friday 22 September from 9 to 10:30 will be open to every remote participant. If you want to join it please register at https://eoscfuture.eu/eventsfuture/second-eosc-and-data-spaces-joint-session/. \nIf you are already registered (for in person or online participation) to the EOSC Symposium\, no other actions are needed. \nHere’s the agenda of the session: https://symposium23.eoscfuture.eu/symposium/data-spaces/ \nStay tuned for more information\nVisit the official EOSC Symposium website and keep an eye out for the #EOSCsymposium23 hashtag.
